This guest post from my friend Nicci Smith, a foreign correspondent in Taiwan, is poignant and quite moving.
This is the photo Nicci shared:
Yes, indeed, it is a fabulously OTT in-your-face Barbie Doll pink flower.
But there is a back story, too.
Let Nicci tell you, in her own words:
“Last Friday morning started out sunny and promising, but the mood turned suddenly dark when news of a horrific train crash in Taiwan started to filter through on social media.
I started to report on it for my newspaper.
As a journalist, you become somewhat accustomed to covering tragedy, but not immune to it.
By early afternoon, I decided to take a run to clear my head and was suddenly struck by the brightness of a stunning pink flower growing in the wild.
If I’m honest, it didn’t totally clear the gloom, but it did pierce through it.
I stopped to take a picture of it as a reminder of the glimpses of restorative beauty that can help us through tough days.
And then I jogged on.”
Thanks, my friend, and long-distance hugs.
