Just what is it that drives a runner?

Just what is it that drives a runner?

I think I know what drives me, a senior citizen, to run.

Keeping fit.

Staying young.

Making fabulous like-minded friends.

Meeting so many amazing young people.

And then, just today, I read a Facebook post like this, from Pankaj Singh, a member of the Delhi Runners Group, and I am blown away.  Speechless at the grit and determination of this young man to run, despite everything that fate has conspired to throw in his direction.

Just read his chronicle, which I am sharing with his permission.  For non Delhi readers ADHM = Airtel Delhi Half Marathon:

“ADHM2012 –> Ran with cramped body occurs when playing basketball tournament a week prior to race day. Completed Half Marathon in 2:05Hrs.

ADHM2013 –> Body suffered with Dengue fever attack, was on 2 months bed rest. Wokeup, Ran and completed Half Marathon in 2:16Hrs.

ADHM2014 –> Had Major road accident. Vision was not clear, not able to take deep breath as it keep hurting tissues of left lung. Morning body temperature was 102 degrees. Ran and Completed Half Marathon in 1:59 Hrs.

ADHM2015 –> Two Kidney Stones detected of 7.6 and 7.4 mm a month prior to race day. Don’t had practice but have will to complete again.

AIM is clear to complete and become proud finisher again.

Passion bole to Keeda hai ADHM is saal bhi karne ka to karna hai..”

Jeez.

Dengue, road accident, kidney stones…and despite all this, Pankaj is turning in such super times.  I’d love to have a finishing time anywhere near these, and here is this man, running a sub 2 hours with a temperature and unclear vision.

Hats off to you, my friend, and please take care tomorrow.

(Remember that earlier post I shared with you today?  About us all being special idiots…No names, no pack drill, but I’m sure you get my drift :) )
